What is the three-flap difference?
PetSafe extreme weather dog doors utilize a three flap system that allows your pet free access to the outside, while protecting you, and your home, from the cold. These flaps are much more durable and insulated than traditional pet doors. This brand of dog door for cold climate is a well designed pet door, and at maximum efficiency is approximately 3 to 3.5 times more insulating than traditional one flap dog door systems. The two outer flaps in this system are made of the traditional translucent vinyl found in many other pet door systems. Along the bottom of the two vinyl flaps runs a magnet. It runs the entire width of the flap to aid in quick and efficient closure when the door is not in use. The difference maker, though, is the center flap. It is a golden ‘pillow’, or ‘envelope’ of hollow insulating material to save you energy. All three flaps attach to the top of the dog door opening via screws.
Installation
Our PetSafe Extreme Weather Insulated Dog Doors are intended to be installed into an existing door in your home. They come in three sizes; small, medium, and large, meant for dogs up to 15, 40, and 100 lbs. respectively. As always, when purchasing a dog door for cold weather, be sure to purchase the correct size for your pet’s anticipated weight when he or she is full grown. When you install your new extreme weather pet door system, also take care to measure an appropriate height for the ‘step over’ or area that you pet will have to pass over in order to use the door. As a general rule of thumb, the top of the dog door flap should be at or near your dog’s shoulders. By default, this should give you an appropriate height for the ‘step over’. PetSafe extreme weather doors are not top closing doors, so no consideration needs to be taken for the location of your door in reference to your door knobs.
Accessories
The PetSafe Extreme Insulated Dog Door system also comes with one snap-on closing panel to add extra insulation to your dog door when it will not be in use. For even more insulation, an additional snap-on closing panel can be purchased and added to the other side of the door. These dog door systems come in only one frame color, white. However, the frames on these door systems are paintable. This way, you can make them blend in a little bit more to the door you choose to install them in.
