An electric fence is a system that works to keep your dog in your yard, where he belongs. They are better than a standard fence in many ways. Your dog cannot dig underneath an electric fence, nor can he jump over it. An electric dog fence allows you to give your dog full access to your yard. You are the one that decides where you want your border in your yard to be, when you have an underground dog fence. An electric fence also costs much less than erecting a traditional fence. Its borders are also invisible, unless you decide to mount the wires on top of the ground.
How does an Electric Dog Fence Work?
The transmitter located inside your home communicates a radio signal to your dog’s receiver collar that he is wearing. They work in conjunction with the wire that is defining the boundary of your property. Your dog will hear a beep as he gets near the boundary line. If he continues on, he will receive a harmless but surprising static correction. This is a reminder to your dog that he needs to stay in your yard.
Wired Electric Dog Fence vs. Wireless
You may be trying to decide between a wired and wireless dog fence. When it comes to electric dog fence installation, nothing is simpler than a wireless fence. Simply plug in the transmitter, set the size of your boundary circle and put the collar on your dog. However, a wired fence also has its advantages. The signal is stronger and more consistent with a wired fence. There are also special situations that won’t work if you have a wireless fence. If you have a lot of trees in your yard or if there is sloping, the signal won’t work. If you have aluminum or stucco siding, the signal also will not work. Let us help you decide if a wired or wireless fence is right for you.
How to Install an Electric Dog Fence
DIY electric dog fence installation is relatively easy to accomplish with an in-ground version. Begin by plugging in your transmitter in a safe location, such as a garage. Lay the wire around your yard, where you think you want the boundary to be. Connect the ends of the twisted wire to your transmitter, and splice them to attach them to the ground wire. Go ahead and turn on the system. To make sure the system is working, take the collar over to the border to test it. It should beep when you get close to the wire. Next, create trench that is 1 to 3 inches into the ground and bury the wire. If there are areas of your yard where the wire cannot be buried, it is okay to secure the wire to the top of the ground with yard staples.

About Dog Fence Wire
If you purchase a standard dog fence system, it comes with 500 feet of 20-gauge wire. Although this will work if you use it, it may not be the best decision down the road. It is a better idea to order a thicker, 14-gauge wire to use on your electric dog fence. This is because the cheap wiring that comes in a standard kit can actually snap in two. It will have to be replaced every few years, and especially if you have an underground fence, this is an undesirable option. Spending a little bit more on the thicker wire will save you a headache down the road. When you order a PRO-Grade electric dog fence, it comes with the thicker wire, plus several other upgrades.
Extra Accessories
An electric dog fence generally is sold with just one collar. This means that if you have more than one dog, you will need to purchase additional dog collars. See what type of batteries your system takes and if they are rechargeable or not. If your system doesn’t have rechargeable batteries, it would be a good idea to go ahead and pick up some extra batteries for your system. We sell 3-volt, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries as well as Invisible Fence® compatible eXtreme Dog Fence™ collar batteries.
