Upgrading To PRO-Grade Dog Fence Wire

Upgrading to Pro-grade wire

There are two basic types of dog fence wire: factory-grade wire and pro-grade wire. You won't see professional companies like Invisible Fence® using flimsy factory-grade wire. Why? Because they know that higher a higher quality wire translates to a better user experience and that equals more happy customers. Factory-grade wire (the wire included in all DIY dog fence kits) is of medium quality. Regardless of the gauge (more on wire gauge later), factory-grade wire has a vinyl jacket (the coating that covers and protects the copper). The vinyl degrades and cracks over time exposing the copper to the elements and essentially leaving it unprotected and open to rust and breakage. Unlike factory-grade wire, PRO-Grade wire features a 45mm polyethylene plastic jacket that protects the copper core from weather, animal chews, and general wear and tear.

The image to the left shows the the difference in thickness between the 20-gauge wire included in your dog fence kit and the 14-gauge PRO-Grade wire we offer as a system upgrade. Most dog fence kits include a 500 ft. spool of the thin 20-gauge wire. 20-gauge wire is cheaper and lighter to ship and works well enough to be the wire the manufacturer includes with the dog fence kit. For most dog fence installations, we recommend upgrading to PRO-Grade Wire. The thicker wire is more resilient by nature of its increased size. Its harder to sever the PRO-Grade wire and it stands up better to foot traffic, lawn equipment, and the elements than it's thinner 20-gauge counterpart.

Upgrading your dog fence wire right from the start does represent a increase in the cost of your initial investment but the return on that upgrade is well worth the money. The superior jacket paired with the increased size of PRO-Grade dog fence wire protects your investment and saves you the costly and time-consuming hassle of locating and repairing a broken dog fence wire down the line. We generally recommend PRO-Grade wire across the board because we have confidence and years of experience showing that PRO-Grade wire just holds up better. With that said, PRO-Grade wire is especially recommended for above ground installations, areas that have severe weather (especially ice and snow), areas that have rocky soil, areas that are heavily treed, and areas where lawn care equipment is frequently used as these conditions are particularly hard on your dog fence wire.
