The Innotek SD-2000 is the entry-level system offered by the Radio Systems family of brands. The system is very basic, offering just the rudimentary features. While missing all the bells and whistles, and even some of the somewhat necessary features, the system is reliable so it’s a good choice for those on a tight budget.

The system does offer progressive correction (intensity that increases as the dog continues to approach the boundary) but there is only one correction level, which is too strong for small or timid dogs but not strong enough for stubborn or very large dogs.

The collar uses a standard 3V battery available just about anywhere but the battery only lasts about a month. This constant expenditure to replace batteries is something to consider and weigh against investing in a more expensive but rechargeable collar system.

The collar also lacks a low battery indicator, so you need to test it regularly to make sure it’s still working or risk your dog figuring it out and making an escape.

SUMMARY: A very basic system that functions reliably but lacks some key features like adjustable correction levels and a rechargeable collar that really make a dog fence a good investment. The single correction level is really only suitable for dogs over 20 lbs.

  • 500 ft. Of Boundary Wire (1/3 acre worth)
  • Transmitter
  • Receiver Collar
  • 50 Boundary Flags
  • 2 Waterproof Wire Splices
  • Training Manual and DVD

  • Water Resistant: The collar is water resistant, durable and a tad large and clunky. The size of this collar makes it suitable for dogs over 20 lbs. only.
  • One Correction Level: The collar offers a single progressive correction setting. This limitation has the effect of rendering this system useless for all but very medium-sized dogs. The correction would be too strong for small or compliant dogs and not strong enough for very large or stubborn dogs.
  • Replaceable Battery: The collar is not rechargeable but rather utilizes a standard 3V. On the positive side, this is easier to replace than a proprietary battery but since the battery lasts only about a month, you’ll spend a considerable amount of money on batteries over the years.
  • No Low Battery Indicator: This important feature is lacking on the SD-2000 collar. Unfortunately this straps you with checking the battery each time you put the collar on the dog or risking a runaway.

  • Field Width Adjustment: The control box has one adjustment that controls the correction field width. You’ll set the distance from the wire that the collar will warn and then correct the approaching dog.
  • Small & Simple: The control box is very small and discreet with only one adjustment knob. The box is simple to use and easy to mount on the wall.

  • Limited Lifetime Warranty: The manufacturer will replace the system for free in the first year and then offers fixed rate repairs for the lifetime of the product.

The entry-level system from Innotek, the SD-2000 is a basic but reliable system. The waterproof collar features the unique ReadyTest feature to ensure a proper collar fit every time. The system offers a single progressive correction level appropriate for dogs over 20 lbs. and can handle areas up to 5 acres.

Collar Features:

  • Waterproof Containment Collar
  • Cheapest Reliable System
  • Standard Battery
  • High Levels Of Correction (recomended for dogs over 50 pounds)
  • Sure Contact Probes
  • Durable Plastic Receiver Casing

System Features:

  • Range Adjustment
  • 1 Year Warranty
  1. Good basic system Review by Harvey B.

Works like it is supposed to but I agree with Allen, the collar was way too big for my little pooch. Flexpetz helped me exchange the unit for one that suited us better. They were very knowledgeable, I'm going to be sure to call them first before I buy next time. (Posted on 4/6/2013)

  2. Works well Review by Adam

A friend of mine recommended this fencing system for my german sheperd. I was a bit reluctant at first due to the fact that it was quite expensive, however, I'm glad I forked out the funds needed for this. It works well but generally the quality of the product is low grade, wire very cheap, collar very bulky, not very streamline generally just cheap and lacking many features. (Posted on 4/1/2013)

  3. Basic system Review by Allen

This is a decent basic fence system. It was easy to install and works well for my beagle mix. It keeps Trixie in the yard. The collar is a little on the big side. ok system in general...but in retrospect i probably would have invested in something a little nicer. (Posted on 1/23/2013)

  4. all around quality Review by T

    Innotek Smart Dog SD-2000
    - I wanted to get a fence that was fully featured and that would allow my dogs to have their own area and also provide me with good coverage. Luckily I came into contact with a friend who also purchased a system from flexpetz.com he said I was sure to find what I was looking for. I took his advice and browsed the site for a while until I saw the Innotek Smart Dog SD-2000. I was hooked. It covers a five acre area, it has a 1 year warranty, and I can adjust the range. The decision was one I should have paid a long time ago. Thank you so much!

Comment / Questions about Innotek Smart Dog 2000

From your review, it sounds like the SD 2000 would not work for 7-8 lb chijuajua's. What would be your recommendation for best priced solution for small dogs...I have two chijuajua's in a small yard

Hello Jody,

You are correct the Innotek Smart Dog system would not be suitable for smaller breeds. We do have a couple options available for your chihuahua's though.

The first I would recommend is PetSafe's Elite Little Dog fence. This is the best value system and features a small lightweight collar suitable for breeds 5 lbs and up. It is a basic system with 4 adjustable levels of correction.

Another choice is the Perimeter Technologies In-ground Fence which is in my opinion the most bang for your dollar. It has the lightest collar available at 1.1 ounces and one of the smartest feature rich transmitters on the market. It has 5 levels of correction and comfort contacts™ which provide the best fit for your little ones.

The links are for the basic systems but we also have PRO-grade kits available for more long term applications. These come with our best quality wire which is rated for underground burial and will provide you with many years of worry free operation as opposed to up to 3 years with the factory grade wire.
