On December 6, 2011, Procter and Gamble® (P&G) issued a recall for a production lot of its Iams® ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food. The product in question includes Iams® ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food with “best by” dates of 2/513 and 2/6/13, including 7-lb. bags , code date 12784177I6, UPC code 1901402305; 8-lb. bags, code dates 12794177D2 and 12794177D3, UPC code 1901410208; and 17.5-lb. bags, code dates 12794177K1 and 12974177K2, UPC code 1901401848.

The recalled items were distributed to retailers in the Eastern United States and include the states of Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

The reason for the recall was due to higher-than-acceptable aflatoxin levels. Aflatoxin, while a naturally occurring by-product of Aspergillus flavus, can prove harmful to pets if consumed in large quantities. Symptoms to look for include lethargy and sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and yellowish tint to the eyes and gums. Pets which show these signs should be taken to a veterinarian.
